CONTEMPORARY DRAWING MASTERCLASS

How Artists Transform What They See

One Day Studio Workshop with Thomas Bucich in the Southern Highlands

Most drawing workshops four on learning to draw what you see.

This Masterclass explores how artists transform what they see.

Beginning with observation and the foundations of classical drawing, this immersive one and two-day workshop explores the journey from representation toward interpretation, expression and abstraction.

Rather than treating drawing as a means of recording the world, we will approach it as a process of discovery, experimentation and transformation. Through a series of guided exercises, demonstrations and material explorations, participants will learn how contemporary artists use drawing as a tool for thinking, questioning and developing a personal visual language.

Guided by artist, designer and creative mentor Thomas Bucich, participants will be introduced to a unique approach to drawing developed through decades of artistic practice in both Australia and New York. Drawing upon classical traditions of observation, composition and draftsmanship, Thomas will share the methods and processes he uses in his own works on paper—combining traditional skills with contemporary experimentation, unconventional materials and mixed-media techniques.

Starting with direct observation, participants will gradually move through processes of simplification, distortion, memory, gesture, layering and abstraction. Along the way, drawings will be altered, disrupted, edited and reimagined while still retaining their essential character and vitality.

Working with graphite, charcoal, ink, washes and mixed media, participants will be encouraged to move beyond conventional drawing materials and explore some of the unexpected techniques, surfaces and processes that have become a distinctive part of Thomas’s own artistic practice. The result is an approach to drawing that is both grounded in tradition and open to experimentation.

This is not a workshop about producing perfect drawings.

It is about learning how artists move from seeing the world to interpreting it.

It is about finding freedom within structure, expression within observation, and discovering how drawing can become a living and evolving process of inquiry rather than simply an exercise in accuracy.

During the Workshop You Will Explore

  • Classical approaches to observation and drawing

  • Line, tone, rhythm and composition

  • Expressive mark-making and gesture

  • Drawing from memory and imagination

  • Layering, erasure and transformation

  • Contemporary approaches to abstraction

  • Experimental mixed-media techniques

  • Unconventional drawing materials and surfaces

  • Working with graphite, charcoal, ink and washes

  • Developing a more personal and individual visual language

What Makes This Workshop Different?

Most drawing workshops focus on learning to draw what you see.

This workshop explores how artists transform what they see.

Drawing upon his own artistic practice, Thomas Bucich will share a range of techniques and processes used in the creation of his highly individual mixed-media drawings. Participants will gain insight into how traditional drawing principles can be combined with layering, surface experimentation, unusual materials and intuitive mark-making to create contemporary works that feel personal, expressive and alive.

This is a rare opportunity to step inside the working process of a professional artist and discover how drawings can evolve from observation into something unexpected and uniquely your own.

Who Is This Workshop For?

  • Beginners seeking a more creative and engaging introduction to drawing

  • Artists wishing to loosen up and move beyond realism

  • Painters, sculptors and printmakers looking for new ways to generate ideas

  • Anyone interested in contemporary art and the creative process

No prior drawing experience is required.
